The St. Helena Historical Society (“SHHS,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through shstory.org (the “Site”), how we use it, and the choices you have. SHHS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

We collect information in two ways — information you provide directly, and information gathered automatically as you use the Site.
Information you provide
- Contact and membership details — your name, email address, mailing address, and phone number, provided when you join as a member, make a donation, register for an event, request image reproductions or research, or contact us.
- Payment information — donations and membership payments are processed by our third-party payment provider, Zeffy. We do not collect or store your full payment-card number on our servers.
- Correspondence and submissions — the contents of messages you send us, and any materials you choose to share, such as historical photographs or documents offered for donation.
Information collected automatically
- Usage data — your IP address, browser and device type, referring pages, and the pages you view, collected through cookies and similar technologies to help us understand how the Site is used.
How We Use Your Information
- Process and acknowledge memberships, donations, and event registrations;
- Respond to your inquiries and fulfill research and image-reproduction requests;
- Send our newsletter, The Electrolier, and occasional updates, where you have asked to receive them;
- Maintain, improve, and secure the Site;
- Comply with our legal obligations and protect our rights.

- Zeffy — processes donations and membership payments.
- PastPerfect Online — hosts our searchable collections catalog at shstory.pastperfectonline.com.
- Embedded content — some pages include media from services such as YouTube and Google Maps, which may set their own cookies.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us operate the Site and our programs, or when required by law.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email or by contacting us directly.

We take reasonable measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
